Workshop on Systems to Support Renaturation Projects

The German coal phase-out and the associated structural and landscape changes in the affected regions contribute to achieving the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as large areas which have so far been used for coal mining are renewed and restored. Successful renaturation and reclamation of opencast mining regions, e.g., Lusatia or the Leipzig region, pose enormous challenges for the responsible companies and public administrations, which require special support through informatic modeling and contemporary IT systems. In the course of renaturation projects, a multitude of heterogeneous data, such as documents, geospatial, environmental, weather and climate data, have to be managed from different sources. Even after the completed renaturation, these regions have to be monitored in a complex way. For the sustainable use of the restored areas, relevant data has to be available permanently, for example, to document possible restrictions on use. Thus, efficient IT systems which support such processes are needed.

Research projects, such as SARDINE (Leipzig University, HTWK Leipzig, InfAI e.V. Leipzig) and TRIM4Post-Mining (coordinated by the TU Freiberg), show that there is a need in this research area to discuss these challenges and possible solutions. The workshop will therefore present and discuss possible solutions to these concrete challenges in environmental informatics. Possible contributions should address the architecture and user requirements of potential IT systems for information technology support of renaturation processes. Areas of focus may include, but are not limited to, the following topics:

  • System architectures and optimizations
  • Methods, technologies, and software tools for integrating, processing, analyzing, and linking heterogeneous data.
  • Efficient digital provision of homogenized information
  • Deployment strategies and potential use cases for data analytics (cloud, fog, edge)
  • Requirements for IT systems with sustainability relevance and possible applications in public administration and private companies
  • Dealing with error-prone data and automatic error correction
  • Possible business models for providers of IT systems with sustainability relevance

Submission

Accepted submissions will be published in GI-Edition: Lecture Notes in Informatics (LNI) (Volume 308). Therefore all submission must follow the Guidelines for the Authors and must use the templates available here. Please note that we strongly recommend and prefer submissions in LaTeX format. Submissions should be written in English.

Submission have to be uploaded before the deadline in the easychair submission system.

We welcome full papers with 8 - 10 pages and extended abstracts with up to 3 pages.
